Recipient Org: Description | Oi Polloi is a project based at Bristol Old Vic, bringing together people who have lived experience of homelessness and working with them to form a theatre group. We focus on their experiences, past and present, and the impact they have had on their mental health. We also focus on rehabilitation through access and participation in theatre, including playful, fun, and joyous experiences for our participants. As a safeguarding measure, we never ask our participants to reveal any information of their lived experiences prior to joining Oi Polloi. However, we have found that often participants share details of their lives during the sessions. Those who participate typically have had experience of: - unemployment - prison - ill-health, both mental and physical - addiction recovery - unstable housing situations - seeking asylum Over the three 10-week terms, starting in October 2022 and culminating in July 2023, we will explore a range of theatre making techniques across three terms which will result in a performance at Bristol Old Vic. Professional directors facilitate sessions, ensuring each workshop is delivered to the highest theatrical standard. Every session is attended by a Support Worker who is responsible for the pastoral care of individuals in the group. Most people in the group are still experiencing unstable housing situation – by having a support worker in each session, participants have a chance to seek help from them, which in turn allows them to participate fully in the workshops and performance. |
