Recipient Org: Description Bridges for Communities is a small charity working to make Bristol a more welcoming, inclusive and fair city. A major part of our work is focussed on promoting community cohesion - helping culturally diverse communities (with a particular focus on refugees and asylum seekers) to feel welcome and to rebuild their lives here. We also partner with Bristol City Council to provide welcome activities for newly arrived refugees through the resettlement programme. The activities we provide support, equip and connect communities: B.friend – 1-1 befriending service matching local volunteers with newly arrived refugee families for a year long partnership to tackle isolation and loneliness Walk with Me – a programme of monthly walks for refugees and asylum seekers, improving physical and mental health Stitching Together – Saturday sewing classes by and for refugee women at beginner and intermediate levels, a safe space to learn new skills and make new friends RefuLingua - supporting people of refugee background to teach their native language to Bristolians, gaining paid UK work experience and building financial capability Peace Feast – bringing people together from different cultures and faiths for food, music and storytelling, working towards increased tolerance and understanding. Bristol School Linking - matching diverse schools for a year long learning programme to challenge prejudice and stereotyping. 2021 achievements: 1120 people attended Welcome Events for new arrivals 274 people attended group walks for refugee families and locals 500 children took part in school linking activities to learn about different cultures 10 tutors were employed to deliver lessons 10 women learnt new skills on a pilot sewing course 216 people attended 4 PeaceFeast events 76 refugees and asylum seekers received befriending support 84 volunteers trained as befrienders, to be matched with newly arrived refugees 70 students learnt either Arabic or Pashto through our RefuLingua project
