Recipient Org: Description The Whitfield Tabernacle is an important heritage asset, of significance both locally and nationally, and all future uses start from the basis of showcasing the building’s history and meaning. That said, restoring it to its former glory in the style of a mid-18th Century non-conformist church enables a flexible space open to be used for a range of arts, performance, learning and community uses. It is a Grade 1 listed building and is set within a small conservation area which includes the former churchyard which has been transferred to the control of the local authority and will be transformed into a small “pocket park”. It forms a centrepiece for the planned regeneration of Kingswood town centre. With the support of South Gloucestershire Council and the West of England Combined Authority, we have secured capital funds to restore the building in full and construction work starts in early 2023. We are now developing a detailed plan for the building’s future use as a community creative hub combining arts and education within its unique historic setting. The public park setting, just off Regent Street/Kingswood High Street, gives further flexibility of use by enabling uses to flow between indoors and outdoors. To date the Trust has secured ownership of the building, over £700,000 for the restoration, undertaken stabilisation works to secure the building – it now has a roof (!), strengthened the Management Committee, undertaken public consultation to understand aspirations for its future use and raise the profile of the project. The majority of the work of the Trust to date has been to secure the actuality of the restoration, but we also now have fundraising and development strategies ready for the next phase of detailed design, fitting out, and community engagement activities to build our audience prior to opening in early 2024.
