Recipient Org: Description Groundwork South has 40 years’ experience delivering activities that drive social and environmental regeneration across southern England. Our work is designed to support the most deprived and disadvantaged communities, to facilitate the following outcomes: Improving people’s prospects: support to children and young people (YP), families, long-term unemployed, and refugees/migrants to increase confidence, skills, wellbeing and employability. Creating better places: supporting people to work collectively to make their surroundings greener, more resilient, safer and healthier and be actively involved in their communities and neighbourhoods. Promoting greener living and working: helping people, organisations and businesses learn more about their environmental impact and to reduce natural resource use; address fuel poverty; and improve their health/wellbeing. In Bristol, we operate from The Vench adventure playground and community centre, providing crucial support to disadvantaged families in Lockleaze, a ward within the top 20% most deprived nationally. We provide holistic support to vulnerable communities, including free, high-quality recreation and pastoral support to children; activities to improve wellbeing (e.g. an all abilities gardening club); and work to combat food poverty (e.g. our FOODclub supplies food parcels containing supermarket food diverted from landfill, estimated to cost £15-£20 for £3.50). BYCA funding was crucial to our holiday provision in 2022/2023, allowing us to deliver highly successful activities to disadvantaged families. Overall, 60 children attend cooking workshops during our half-term activities, while 23 families were signposted to additional services. Our activities supported children to build their confidence, develop interpersonal skills and relationships with other children/trusted adults, and improve their physical health/mental wellbeing. Recent feedback: Child, aged 8: “We love coming to the Vench, I enjoy playing with my friends and going down the drop slide’’ Parent: “Since I have discovered the Vench my children have wanted to come every day, everyone is so friendly, and the activities are fun.’’
