Recipient Org: Description The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) is an independent UK charity established in 1979 to tackle climate change and end the misery of cold homes. Based in Bristol, we undertake practical work to support households and communities to take action on energy. Tackling fuel poverty is central to our strategy; cold homes cause suffering, ill-health, and social exclusion. Low income or pension entitlement can trap older households in a cycle of poverty. Our Household Energy Services team (HES) supports disadvantaged households with home energy issues. The team operates a freephone telephone advice service Monday-Friday and casework support, providing households with energy advice covering; claiming discounts and benefits, support switching suppliers and clearing fuel debt, energy saving measures and behaviours and advice to reduce condensation, damp, and mould. The demand for this service increased throughout the pandemic as more people fell into crisis and poverty deepened. In 2020-21 we saw a 45% increase in household enquiries, supporting 14,850 households with 21,337 separate cases and saving clients more than £2.7 million collectively. The majority of these clients were either in or at risk of fuel poverty, and a significant proportion had a listed health condition. As a result of our support households have increased income, live in warmer, safer homes and are less likely to suffer from the health consequences of living in a cold home. We currently have over 70 active projects helping communities across the country. An example of one of our projects is our Assisting B&NES on Local Energy (ABLE) project, which started in July 2020 to support older and disabled people in B&NES who are living in fuel poverty and has helped 1,249 households so far.
