Recipient Org: Charity Number 1165364
Recipient Org: Description Vision North Somerset supports people with visual impairment or hearing impairment across North Somerset. We are grant funded by North Somerset Council to provide a sight loss registration service, vision rehabilitation, information and support, and an equipment service. We also deliver a range of voluntary services designed to improve quality of life, health and wellbeing for people with sight loss and to promote their independence and inclusion. They include: individual support (needs assessment, information, advice and guidance), wellbeing (a befriending service and peer support through social activities), and digital inclusion (training and support). All of our services are underpinned by a thriving volunteering programme and around a third of our volunteers are themselves visually impaired. There are almost 9000 people living with significant sight loss in North Somerset, of whom only around 700 are registered blind. Over 8000 visually impaired people have no statutory support. All are at high risk of isolation, loneliness, inactivity, falls and poor mental health. Vision North Somerset has around 1500 service users with varying degrees and types of sight loss and around 700 service users with hearing loss. Our voluntary services enable us to provide locally focused, person-centred support in response to what visually impaired people want and need. Most of our service users are older people aged 65+, many of whom have health conditions in addition to visual or hearing impairment, compounding their vulnerability. We are increasingly taking our services out into communities where they are more easily accessed by visually impaired people. Recent funding from St Monica Trust has allowed us to expand 'Click and Connect', our digital inclusion service through drop ins at libraries and other community venues and partnership development. We are also expanding our Wellbeing services, increasing the number and type of social support groups and growing our befriending service.
