Recipient Org: Description | Established in 2010, Bridges for Communities is a small local organisation that helps make Bristol a more welcoming, inclusive and fair city. A major part of our work is focussed on improving the lives of refugees and asylum seekers who face difficulties and often have limited access to support. Our projects facilitate them to use their skills in the community, rather than simply be recipients of support. For refugees and asylum seekers in particular, the need is for projects tackling: • Loneliness • Isolation • Mental health • Lack of access to fresh air and exercise • Lack of opportunity to use their skills Our recent work includes projects ranging from weekly Saturday sewing classes to regular language teaching opportunities, monthly walking groups to year-long befriending partnerships and our participants come from a diverse range of communities including Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Sudan and Ukraine. Our projects are designed to strengthen the local community by being mutually beneficial, so that local residents can participate as volunteers and benefit from making new friends and learning about a different culture. We also provide task volunteering, welcome events and holiday activities as part of our contract with Bristol City Council’s resettlement services. We are a small part-time staff team (equivalent to 6 full time posts) and our office is housed with similar organisations above Baraka Community Cafe in Easton Family Centre (ranked nationally in the lowest 10% of areas with multiple deprivation). More than half our staff are native speakers of other languages and/or have lived experience of the Middle East including staff originally from Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Iran and Sudan. We work alongside our growing team of volunteers to maximise reach and efficiency – last year 3050 hours were donated by 136 local volunteers. |
