Recipient Org: Charity Number 1187070
Recipient Org: Description ACFA is an umbrella organisation which has been in existence for over 30 years, although has only recently (2019) registered as a Charity. There are currently 26 members. Membership is made up of organisations who provide free and confidential legal advice to individuals on matters of social welfare law – this includes welfare benefits, debt, housing, immigration and asylum, employment, mental health, education and consumer. It is expected that organisations undertaking this are insured to do so and have some form of accreditation. Agencies come from across the West of England, but the majority are concentrated in Bristol. Organisations not directly providing advice can become affiliate members and take advantage of some of the services offered. In the main ACFA has historically offered quarterly meetings between agencies and access into low cost professional training, mainly in the area of welfare benefits (where demand for advice is highest), this provision alongside small membership fees has secured the continuity of the organisation. It also hosts a website to enable anyone seeking advice to locate the nearest or most relevant services for them. It has in the past through securing funding supported a part time administrator and worked with (2009- 2014) a specific advice project, funded by Barings and the lottery, whose aim was to co-ordinate advice provision and develop partnership and policy work. One of the legacies of this is the Bristol Advice Partnership which received ring-fenced money from BCC to support advice provision in the city. ACFA has not had any paid for support for the last 7 years and has been largely managed for a small fee by one of the existing members.
