Recipient Org: Description | The Rock is a multi-generational community run centre, a one of a kind on a large deprived council estate with an increasing population and little resources available to the residents. We provide a community facility for activities identified by the community, with specific reference to the elderly and the disabled of all ages. Our centre meets the needs of the community as a whole, by addressing issues covering isolation, food poverty, loneliness, financial advice, health issues, depression, boredom, a sense of belonging, whilst promoting community cohesion. We address community health needs through local, accessible and complimentary services so that we can offer opportunities for improving health and wellbeing and support those suffering from long term health conditions, therefore creating a centre for the community giving people a sense of purpose and belonging in an area that is well known for offering few opportunities and amenities. Since the beginning of the cost of living increase, we have adapted to become a warm/safe space that is open and available to all. Our centre runs a daily food share scheme with a local supermarket chain, who provide us with free food for the community. This helps to combat food poverty within the area as there are high levels of this locally. We offer volunteering opportunities and teach those volunteers new skill. The Centre has been providing the community with health related activities since 1990 and is a valuable asset. We have close links with our local GP's and we receive referrals from these practices for people with social or health problems. In addition, our centre is used by the NHS and other health care providers to provide vaccinations to the community. |
