Recipient Org: Description Our mission at Ablaze is to tackle inequality of opportunity for young people in the West of England. Our reach encompasses B&NES, Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset. Our unique model harnesses the skills of business volunteers to support and empower the learning and professional development of young people who are under-served, under-estimated, disengaged and lacking social collateral to spark their boundless potential. Our work aims to raise young people’s confidence and widen their aspirations, support attainment and skill levels as well as empower young people with knowledge to make informed choices about their future. Our programmes consist of- Reading & Number Partners Pupils aged 6 to 12 receive 1-to-1 or group support each week from corporate partner volunteers to improve their reading and literacy or mental maths ability over the course of a full school year. Career Mentoring Students aged between 10 and 16 receive a unique group mentoring programme from trained volunteers at a local business, either in one day or for six sessions with some at the workplace. Mentors impart knowledge of workplace skills, employability opportunities and career pathways, widening students’ ideas of what’s possible for themselves. For many, this will be their first experience of stepping into a real workplace. Employability Support Tailored workshops for young people aged 16 to 25 at the start of their working lives, delivered by professionals to support them improve their skills, increase their confidence, and have the experience of putting learning into practice in workplace scenarios. Students receive additional Reading & Numbers support or Career Mentoring from corporate partner volunteers. Young people with lived experience of programmes help to shape our work through being Junior Trustees. We also ask all the young people involved in our programmes to evaluate and provide feedback and ideas for future programmes.
