Recipient Org: Description | The Avon Centre is an equine and nature activities centre which harnesses the power of nature and horses to improve the physical, emotional, and mental health of people in our community. We have a 40-year track-record of bringing the positive experience and proven therapeutic benefits of horse riding to Disabled children, young people and adults with a wide range of complex additional needs. We are currently expanding our charity purposes to include disadvantaged groups. As a result we aim to forge stronger links between the Avon Centre and community organisations to include people from underrepresented and minoritised backgrounds. The main services we provide include: RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association) riding lessons tailored for a wide range of needs; alternative education pony interactions (unmounted) for therapeutic purposes and delivering ASDAN equine qualifications. Since 2012 we have welcomed disadvantaged children from a local primary school to enjoy forest school on our grounds; and since 2022 have piloted outreach schemes for minoritised and marginalised children and young people. Our staff team and trustees reflect the diversity of our beneficiaries. Of 15 staff and trustees 40% are Disabled and trustee Sylvia Vincent is a Black Caribbean EDI adviser. To ensure we deliver the most appropriate service and are responsive to users' needs we work in partnership with community organisations with whom we co-design adapted programmes. These include therapeutic horse-based physiotherapy with the Children's Hospital; family taster days with Bristol Autism Support and employment skills with the Prince's Trust. Since 2022 we have expanded our outreach activities to taster days and courses of riding lessons for disadvantaged children from refugee, asylum-seeking and minoritised backgrounds. These were very successful and our partner organisations are keen to expand our outreach work together. This has empowered the Avon Centre to become more diverse and promote tolerance and understanding. |
