Recipient Org: Description | Helping people to Thrive rather than just survive by introducing the many benefits being part of a bowls club can bring. Using bowls to: - increase physical activity - improve mental health & wellbeing - reduce social isolation & loneliness 'Thrive with Bowls' was successfully introduced last year - with 25 free weekly sessions and over 500 people from the local community attending our open days. We broke down all barriers to entry - making bowling in Backwell free and easy to access, from subsidised membership, no dress code, beginners games, new coaches, disability equipment. As a result we won the Bowls England National Award for Diversity & Inclusion 2023. We want to continue this work with a particular focus on those with disabilities, long term health conditions and the over 65s as we have seen first hand the positive difference we can make: * All our new members say they've increased their physical activity enjoying the social interactions equally as much. * One, recovering from a stroke has, through bowls, kept active - in fact he says it’s the most fit he’s ever been! * A lady recovering from a severe disabling illness has through bowls become more active, confident and social from being housebound. * Her carer and family also took up playing as a result and are now keen bowlers too. * One member commented how their mental health has improved through being outside in the fresh air and also how bowling was cathartic keeping their mind busy. * We had a number of widowers join who cite that bowls has been an antidote to the social isolation felt following their loss. * We often hear the phrase ‘bowls has saved me.’ This is due not only to the physical activity but the social companionship that bowling provides. |
