Recipient Org: Description Windmill Hill City Farm is a 4.5-acre green urban oasis with a mission to bring experiences of food, farming and the environment to the heart of Bristol. We improve the lives of local people by providing both facilities (working farm, gardens, café, community rooms) and services (education, health and social care, childcare). The farm is situated in one of the 20% most deprived areas of the UK. Our services include: - Health and social care programme benefitting 360 volunteers, ranging from those experiencing mental health challenges to more independent gardening and animal care volunteers, and corporate volunteers. - Children’s nursery, and farm adventurers preschool attended by a total of 126 children. - Outdoor Learning programme hosting 2,500 children and families from disadvantaged areas in workshops, nurture groups and supper clubs. - Providing a working farm, peaceful gardens, sustainable café and community meeting spaces which had 203,000 visits in the last year. Windmill Hill City Farm was founded on principals of community engagement in decision making. We have 221 members, 11 trustees, 129 staff and 380 volunteers who are predominantly local people, and all have a say in the services we run. Many of our members, trustees and staff have lived experience of the needs we are addressing, for example working through mental health crises, or using horticulture as therapy. All of our programmes are driven by participants’ interests, including school children, families, independent and supported volunteers. Volunteers are also invited to attend quarterly meetings with our CEO to share their feedback and opinions. We run regular ‘community conversations’ on local issues, have an annual ‘Big Listen’ campaign to ask the community what issues they would like to focus on, and host regular community events which attract 500 people.
