| Recipient Org: Description | This application led by Corston Community Orchard CIC will be delivered in partnership with Grow Timsbury CIC. Corston Community Orchard was established in June 2021 by local people who came together to transform an overgrazed horse paddock into a beautiful space for people to enjoy and where nature can thrive. Planted in January 2022 with 300 native trees, 80 fruit and nut trees and 230 metres of mixed hedging, the orchard is now a much loved and valued space for residents and visitors. For two years running the orchard has been recognised as an ‘outstanding’ community project by the Royal Horticultural Society. The orchard is used by a wide range of groups. Many local people walk daily in the orchard, or take time to sit on one of the benches for peace and quiet. Local churches in Corston and Keynsham meet together on the orchard once a year for outdoor worship. We have organised several events for people to learn about wildlife, including bat walks and moth trapping. Each year we hold a summer event, which this year was held in partnership with Grow for Life, a local therapeutic gardening charity, raising much needed funds for both groups. Last year we supported seven young people to achieve their Duke of Edinburgh bronze and silver awards by involving them in the development of the orchard. With Wessex Water funding and advice from Avon Wildlife Trust (AWT), they established a pond, and with support from WECA Community Pollinator Fund they scarified and planted a wildflower meadow. Dan Norris, West of England Metro Mayor came to meet the Duke of Edinburgh students on the orchard in May 2024. The success of the first group has resulted in a second cohort of DofE students this year. |
