Recipient Org: Description Bristol Citizens Advice Bureau (CA Bristol) improves the lives of the city’s most vulnerable residents. Our free, independent and confidential advice is available to anyone who needs it, but as one in four Bristolians live in deprivation, it is people within these communities that most frequently require our support. Last year 3,963 individuals and families turned to us for advice with 25,158 problems. Over half were related to core issues of debt, benefits, utilities and food, housing, employment, relationships or discrimination. Amongst a broad spectrum, we support single parents struggling to feed their children, refugees and asylum seekers, and isolated older people at risk of losing their home. 55% of our service users who provided data have a disability or long-term health condition, 40% have dependent children, and many feel anxious or depressed before seeking support. People with poor mental health are more likely to fall behind paying bills, and become homeless. Accessible online, over the telephone, face-to-face at our city centre office and community outreach sites, our advice provides people with the information and guidance they need to resolve critical problems. Our priorities are always to resolve issues before they escalate, then agree long-term action. We encourage service users to play an active role, but we frequently lead next steps calling third parties, completing forms, and even attending court with beneficiaries. We help 90% to find a positive way forward, and 89% report feeling less anxious or depressed thanks to our interventions. 59 qualified volunteers, supported by expert Advisers, deliver all of our support. Volunteers commit to an ongoing training programme and are recruited from across the city’s communities; many have lived experience of challenges faced by clients. All beneficiaries are asked to complete a questionnaire, assessment of which ensures that their voices inform the services we offer.
