Recipient Org: Description BEMSCA was set up 30 years ago to provide advice and support to older members of the BAME (Black and Minority Ethnicity) community who felt their ethnic and cultural needs were not being acknowledged or understood. We have 180 members from the Afro Caribbean, Chinese and Asian communities across B&NES. Through our lunch club, weekly classes and one to one support provided by trained staff and volunteers, BEMSCA has created a lifeline which is helping break down barriers of isolation and misunderstanding. It has also created a safe haven where older members of the BAME community can relax and enjoy new activities and make friends. Many of BEMSCA’s early members are now very elderly and are unable to attend the weekly day centre at Fairfield House. Illness, recuperation from hospitalization, disability or problems with mobility, bereavement, caring for a partner and even depression have all impacted on members so they cannot participate in weekly activities. We now provide a vital outreach programme, visiting those in hospital or recovering at home. We help with household chores, provide personal care, shopping, accompany on visits to doctor's appointments or do referrals or offer advocacy support to deal with housing and social welfare concerns. During the COVID-19 pandemic our support services moved online and we started to deliver cooked meals and shopping direct to members doorsteps. These visits enabled us to carry our welfare checks as well. We also launched a new mental health service to support people visiting Fairfield House, or members self isolating and needing extra help.
